Happy Purim 2007!
Purim begins on Sunday. It's a 3 day holiday when Jews dress up in costumes to commemorate another one of our victories over the antisemites.
My favourite nephew is 17 years old. And sometimes I think it's best not to explain anything further.

And yes, they did win first place in the costume competition of their high school.

Freaking hilarious!

I think I find this more shocking than hilarious. You see, when my nephew was younger he was probably the shyest kid you'd meet. He wouldn't talk a whole lot. We figured he took after his father, who had only one girlfriend because she asked HIM out.
So here's this very shy kid, who stayed in kindergarten one extra year because the kindergarten teacher didn't think he was ready for school yet (did I mention he was shy and wouldn't talk or socialise with anyone?). And this very shy kid, and a kindergarten "failure" has been winning excellence awards every single year in high school, is the most popular kid in high school, has a ton of friends, and is pretty much the leader of the pack. And NOW...he's won first place in costume design.
I dunno. Something about this kid just makes me realise how much I wanted a kid of my own since I first held him in my arms. But seeing him grow up brings me just as much pleasure as if he were mine.

This reminds me of high school. I went to a school named "King David" which might give you just a little hint as to its religious persuasion!
It's probably the bizarrest Jewish school in the country though, as my city has only a handful of school-age Jews (most of the community is *ancient*), so Jewish kids were outnumbered by 10 - 1. Still though, we all had to eat kosher, celebrate holidays, etc.
We used to design Purim costumes in groups, with one member of the group modelling it on the school stage...I was once co-erced into dressing as the Millennium Dome. The costume was shoddy and terrible, and we lost, oy vey ;)
Happy Purim.

My wife explained to me once that the theme of most Jewish holidays is-
They attacked us.
We fought them.
We won.
Let's eat.
She didn't say anything about costumes, though. I'll have to ask her about that.
